INNER RING AUTOMATION

What is happening with automation and globalization, that’s not going away.

Handy’s inner ring is going through changes.  Process work is reconfigured by tech, Including robotics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, 3-D printing, and software.  Process work that can be standardized is automated as machines are getting smarter and faster.

In the last few years, artificial intelligence has the ability to understand and communicate to VUCANs based upon context.  For example, much of this book was dictated through the voice recognition program on a Mac computer.  The rise of the machines can partially be explained because they make business sense.  VUCANs get angry, distracted by cell phones, attend meetings, get hungry, take breaks, and get irritated by bosses and coworkers.  Machines don’t.

So, what about VUCANs?  Many assume that jobs will fundamentally disappear.  In some cases, this is true.  In other cases, the jobs and work will morph into a collaboration of worker plus machine working better and faster.  This is called cobot work involving machine and human.  Cobots automating repetitive work and VUCANs using human judgment will jointly prove to be more productive.

The challenge is to determine what jobs, functions, occupations, or work will be automated in the near future. Automation over the next five years will probably be applied to routine tasks and big data searches.  Routine tasks will follow proceduralized set of activities usually defined by a clear set of rules.  For example pattern recognition will be used in manufacturing to determine the quality of products.  Pattern recognition will be used to identify faces and people.  Pattern recognition will be used to find unexpected business opportunities in big data searches.

Work Lesson Earned: What is the role of a human worker in an automated or roboticized company? Huge question.  There are no easy answers!
