In Working It: Disruption Rules, I’ve tried to blend a linear narrative with a non-linear approach. Each story is a block of information, a stand-alone thought-bite about work, career, and job disruption, that is distilled into a one-page story. While the thought bite may seem like fluffy popcorn, we hope it can provide bread crumbs for you to follow regarding your Future of Work.
The thought-bite may be loosely connected to the chapter and may not be a linear jump from the previous story. This was done intentionally. Why? You, the reader, can read this book from beginning-to-end (Gutenberg approach) or can dip into it as required to pick up thought-bites, noodle them, and then revisit them later on (digital approach).
Work Lesson Earned. We present one-page stories that walk and lead you through the changes of what we call the COVID disruptions of work.
Caveat: Most work innovation and career success involves failure. Why failure? And, ultimate success requires risk acceptance and a high tolerance for failure. Working It in COVID time emphasizes Risk based, Problem solving (RBPS) and Risk based, Decision making (RBDM) both are the essence of work success/failure, personal self management, adding value, career resilience, execution, and career agility. Why RBPS and RBDM? Designing your future involves making conscious and smart choices based on your risk appetite. Workers will do hybrid jobs involving pivoting to see what works.
Work Lesson Earned: In each story, we capture a Work Lesson Earned, which is the distillation of Working It. Why? We wanted to flip the expression: Life Lesson Learned. Work is our focus, specifically our personal expression and adding market value. All life and work involve lessons. It’s up to us to learn from them. We want to focus on things you’ve done and earned.
Caveat: Work Lesson Earned illustrates work context, considerations, assumptions, and impacts that may be valid for some readers and not for others in COVID time. There’s no guarantee the Work Lesson Earned will be relevant next month or for all readers. This book simply provides guidelines that you use with your professional discretion. Practice common sense and seek a workplace professional if you have any personal questions.
