Coping with the Handy model is a huge problem for organizations as more workers see the handwriting on the wall and morph into Brand U’s. This started 15 years ago, but is now accelerating world wide.
The Economist Magazine summed it up neatly:
“Focusing on core competencies might mean outsourcing peripheral employees, but it also means creating a core group of loyal employees who have worked for the company for years; who have absorbed or helped to create its ethos; and who are committed enough to transmit that ethos to future employees. … the focus is increasingly on finding non-financial carrots to retain these ‘core ‘employees (if the only reason why an employee stays with any particular firm is money, then he or she is much easier to poach”[i]
