The new workplace evangelists believe there are universal principles in life and work. More of these principles are people and principle centered. Individual and people values involve human dignity, fairness, integrity, and honesty.
Stephen R. Covey is probably the most prominent writer promoting the importance of individual values and clarifying the meaning of work. His books sell millions of copies and his Seven Habits has been translated into more than 40 languages. Covey believes that leadership involves creating a culture of shared values based on people-centered principles.
Why is this happening? One possible reason is we’re a society looking for a vision (ie. the Millennium) or searching for a mission (the lack of job security). Or, we’re looking for something that’s missing in our lives. Many say there’s less or no meaning in their work and want to be inspired. Whatever the reason, this isn’t an isolated event. It’s happening all over.
