Being fired from a job was once the ultimate form of rejection. People would lie on their resumes, go into hiding, suffer from rejection, and seek therapy. Yes, I did many of these when I was sacked.
Well, this strong economy has changed much of this especially as more work is temporary and companies are merging. So what can you do if you’re fired?
- Expect change and uncertainty throughout your career
- Develop yourself into a Brand U
- Take risks with your work and career
- Keep your options open, talk with other companies throughout any employment
- Prepare for job separation from the moment you get a new job – that’s the credo of all Brand U’s
- Cultivate long-term business relationships
- Consult as a Brand U for a while – you may like it
- Don’t threaten or retaliate when fired– it’s often not about you
- Don’t blame anyone if you’re downsized
- Don’t lose your cool if you’re downsized
- Don’t resign to save face
- Talk to a lawyer if there’s anything that looks unfair
- Be honest with people – remember it’s a badge of honor to be downsized
- Chill
- Always keep your Brand U updated
